Abstract:

Provided is a method of estimating a road surface condition which can reliably and accurately estimate the condition of the road surface on which the vehicle is currently traveling from among finely classified road surface conditions on the basis of a sound detection signal from a contact-area sound detecting means for detecting sound in the vicinity of the tire contact area of the traveling vehicle. Frequency distribution waveform is calculated by using a one-Nth-of-octave analysis according to a sound detection signal which can be obtained from a sound detection device for road surface condition estimating (20), and whether or not the calculated frequency distribution waveform satisfies a preset determination condition for each of a plurality of the road surface conditions is determined, thereby estimating the condition of the road surface on which the vehicle is traveling. When the sound is detected, a microphone housed in a case is used and the determination conditions are set so as to be applied to the frequency distribution waveform including the resonance by the case.
