Abstract:
A fine specimen floating on the surface of an ionic liquid is examined with a scanning electron microscope while keeping the specimen uncovered with the ionic liquid.
Fine particles of a specimen which is floatable or hydrophobic are floated on the surface of a hydrophilic aqueous ionic-liquid solution to thereby prevent the fine specimen particles from being covered with the ionic liquid. In the case of a hydrophilic specimen, a hydrophobic ionic liquid is used. Use of an aqueous ionic-liquid solution having low viscosity and high flowability enables fine specimen particles to freely come together or disperse on the surface of the ionic liquid or to be regularly arranged on the surface of the ionic liquid, and further makes it possible to refloat fine specimen particles which sedimented in the ionic liquid. After the configuration of the fine specimen particles has become stable, the aqueous ionic-liquid solution is dried to thereby reduce the flowability of the aqueous ionic-liquid solution before an examination with a scanning electron microscope in order to facilitate the examination with an electron microscope.
