Abstract:
A method suitable for manufacturing alkali-free glass having a high strain point, low viscosity, and low devitrification properties, and that, in particular, is easily float formed. A method for manufacturing alkali-free glass, comprising charging a melting furnace with glass raw material and heating to a temperature of 1400-1800°C to obtain molten glass, then forming the molten glass into a sheet by a float process, wherein heating by the flame of a burner and electrical heating of the molten glass by a heating electrode disposed so as to be immersed in the molten glass in the melting furnace are jointly used for heating in the melting furnace, and the glass raw material and a refractory are selected so that Rb > Rg, where Rb (Ωcm) is the electrical resistivity at 1400°C of the refractory constituting the melting furnace, and Rg (Ωcm) is the electrical resistivity at 1400°C of the molten glass.
