Abstract:
The basic material for optical fiber is manufactured by preparing a tubular glass body having a distribution of refractive indexes formed axisymmetrically around its center axis, preparing separately a columnar body having a distribution of refractive indexes formed symmetrically around its center axis by the VAD method, forming said columnar body by drawing into an elongated bar having a diameter of a predetermined size, inserting thereafter said elongated bar into said tubular glass to be fused therewith, forming thereby an integrated body. From said basic material for optical fiber manufactured as described above, an optical fiber having a distribution of refractive indexes of high accuracy and causing zero dispersion in a band of 1.5 mum can be manufactured. According to this manufacturing method, an optical fiber having a complex distribution pattern of refractive indexes can be easily manufactured.
