Abstract:

A bottle member for an air bag inflator, comprising a pipe body having at its pipe end a diameter reduction part for mounting an initiator and the like, the diameter reduction part having good low-temperature toughness equivalent to a non-diameter reduction part, is manufactured by the following method. A steel pipe having a steel composition comprising C: 0.05 to 0.20%, Si: 0.1 to 1.0%, Mn: 0.10 to 2.0%, Cr: 0.05 to 2.0%, sol. Al: not more than 0.10%, and Ca: 0.0003 to 0.01%, one or two or more optional additive elements selected from Cu: not more than 1.0%, Ni: not more than 1.5%, Mo: not more than 1.0%, V: not more than 0.2%, Nb: not more than 0.1% or Ti: not more than 0.1% with the balance consisting of Fe and impurities including P: not more than 0.025% and S: not more than 0.010% is cold worked. The cold worked steel pipe is cut into a predetermined length. At least one pipe end part of the cut steel pipe is subjected to diameter reduction and is then quenched and tempered.
