Abstract:
Provided is a method for manufacturing an engine poppet valve with which various types of manufacturing can be performed at low cost. This method for manufacturing an engine poppet valve (21) comprises: a forging step for forming a metallic intermediate member (2) in which an intermediate shaft section (3) and an umbrella section (24) are integrated via a neck section (23); a diameter reduction step; and a joining step for joining a shaft end member (25b) having the same outer diameter (D3) as the main body section (25a) to a base end section (25c) of the main body section (25a). In the diameter reduction step, the intermediate shaft section (3) is inserted between a plurality of diameter-reducing tools (9a), each having a shaft material compression surface (9c) and a shaft material introducing surface (9d) formed to be gradually spaced apart toward the tip side from the compression surface (9c), and each being arranged at circumferentially regular intervals with respect to the outer circumference of the intermediate shaft section (3); radially inward compressive force is loaded from the compression surface (9c) of each diameter-reducing tool (9a) brought into contact with a portion of the intermediate shaft section (3) that rotates while performing relative displacement in the direction along the central axis line (O) of the intermediate shaft section to thereby reduce the diameter of a portion of the intermediate shaft section (3) and form a main body section (25a) of a first shaft part (25) on the intermediate member (2) and form a stepped section (26) continuous to the main body section (25a) with the compression surface (9c); and a second shaft part (27) is formed that is continuous to the main body section (25a) via the stepped section (26) by virtue of the non-diameter-reduced remaining portion of the intermediate shaft section (3) and that is thicker than the main body section (25a).
