Abstract:
Provided is a method for manufacturing a glass substrate for use in a magnetic recording medium, which enables a glass substrate that is for use in a magnetic recording medium and that has high smoothness and low surface swell to be manufactured at high yield. Diamond pads (20A, 20B) having diamond abrasive grains fixed by means of a binder are used in a primary lapping process and a secondary lapping process in said manufacturing method. A lapping surface (20a) of the diamond pads (20A, 20B) has a construction in which a plurality of tile-shaped convex parts (21) having flat top sections are disposed side by side. The diamond pad (20A) used in the primary lapping process includes diamond abrasive grains having an average grain size of 4 to 12 μm and having a content of 5% to 70% by volume per convex part (21). The diamond pad (20B) used in the secondary lapping process includes diamond abrasive grains having an average grain size of 1 to 5 μm and having a content of 5% to 80% by volume per convex part (21).
