Abstract:
This method for manufacturing a honeycomb structure includes: a step for preparing a formed honeycomb body by extruding a ceramic starting material using an extrusion die, the formed honeycomb body having a large number of cells which are arranged side by side with cell walls therebetween and which extend in the longitudinal direction, the formed honeycomb body also having an outer peripheral wall formed around the large number of cells; a step for preparing a fired honeycomb body by firing the formed honeycomb body; and a step for preparing a ceramic block using at least one fired honeycomb body. The method for manufacturing a honeycomb structure is characterized in that the extrusion die is provided with a die body which has a starting material introduction side surface and a formed body extrusion side surface, in that a starting material supply hole for supplying the ceramic starting material is formed in the starting material introduction side surface of the die body, in that a forming groove for forming the ceramic starting material into the shape of the formed honeycomb body is formed in the formed body extrusion side surface of the die body, in that a connection section for connecting the starting material supply hole and the forming groove is formed between the starting material supply hole and the forming groove, in that, in a cross-section parallel to the extrusion direction of the ceramic starting material, the connection section includes a curved line section which is provided at the portion thereof connecting to the forming groove and a straight line section which extends from the curved line section toward the starting material supply hole, and in that, if the length of the connection section in the direction parallel to the extrusion direction of the ceramic starting material is a; the width of the portion of the starting material supply hole which connects to the connection section, the width being measured in the direction perpendicular to the extrusion direction of the ceramic starting material, is x; the width of the forming groove which corresponds to the thickness of the cell walls of the formed honeycomb body or to the thickness of the outer peripheral wall of the formed honeycomb body, the width being measured in the direction perpendicular to the extrusion direction of the ceramic starting material, is y; and b=(x-y)/2, the extrusion die includes a portion which satisfies 2.0 ≤ a/b.
