Abstract:
The purpose is to provide a cam shaft manufacturing method such that improvements in wear characteristics, such as pitting resistance and scuffing resistance, can be stably obtained. In order to achieve the purpose, a method for manufacturing an internal combustion engine cam shaft is provided with a heat process step of heating a cam shaft formed by assembling a cam piece of a sintered material onto a shaft body made of steel pipe to a sintering temperature by a heat process apparatus, and a cooling process step of cooling the heat-processed cam shaft by a cooling process apparatus. The cooling process step involves cooling in two stages; i.e., a first stage cooling process step for slow cooling by disposing the cam shaft in a state of being surrounded by a graphite plate which is installed in the cooling process apparatus in a peripherally enclosing manner, and a second stage cooling process step for rapid cooling by causing coolant gas injected into the cooling process apparatus to be circulated by a fan.
