This method for manufacturing a lignin degradation product has: (1) a degradation step for degrading, under the conditions listed below, a raw material containing a plant-type biomass in a solvent that is a mixed solvent of water and a fatty alcohol with a carbon number of 4-10, the solvent performing biphasic splitting at a temperature of 0˚C to 50˚C; and (2) a separation step for separating an organic phase containing a lignin degradation product from the solvent that has performed biphasic splitting at the temperature at which biphasic splitting is possible, after the degradation step. It is thereby possible to obtain large quantities of lignin degradation product from lignin or a material containing lignin. Condition A: the concentration of the raw material with respect to the solvent is 1 mass% to 20 mass%. Condition B: the temperature of reaction is 100˚C to 350˚C. Condition C: the reaction time is 0.1 hours to 10 hours.
