Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a method for manufacturing optically active menthol, which is composed of a few steps that are all catalytic reaction steps, and therefore produces little environment-polluting waste and can achieve a reduction in the manufacturing cost. The present invention pertains to a method for manufacturing optically active menthol, said method comprising: (A-1) subjecting geranial and/or neral to asymmetric hydrogenation to obtain optically active citronellal; (B-1) subjecting the optically active citronellal to ring-closing reaction with an acid catalyst to obtain optically active isopulegol; and (C-1) hydrogenating the optically active isopulegol to obtain optically active menthol.
