An organic EL element manufacturing method which can prevent generation of leak and a dark spot (or dark area) in a scratch part at the time of applying a voltage, even when an organic layer is scratched by a mask, when an electrode is film-formed in a status where the mask is having contact with the organic layer, without providing an insulating layer for preventing a short-circuit between an anode and a cathode. After an organic layer forming process wherein an organic EL layer (14) is formed on a first electrode (13), a second electrode forming process is performed for forming a second electrode (15), in the status where a mask (20) provided with an opening part (19) for specifying a film forming area for the second electrode (15) is having contact with the organic EL layer (14). In the mask (20), on the circumference of the opening part (19) on the side of a plane (21), which has a close contact with the organic EL layer (14), a clearance part (22) is provided for separating an edge part (21a) close to the opening part on the plane (21) from the opening part (19).
