Abstract:

This method for manufacturing a plug that is used in a piercing and rolling machine, which is used in manufacturing seamless steel pipe, includes an arc spraying step in which iron wire is melted by an arc spraying machine, that molten material blown toward the surface of a base material for the plug, and a coating that is constituted of an oxide and Fe formed on the surface of the plug base material. In this arc spraying step, the surface of the plug base material is divided into a plurality of regions (for example, two regions, a tip and shank) in the axial direction of the plug, and the arc spraying is carried out in a state in which the crossing angle between the centerline of the blowing from the arc spraying machine and the surface of the plug base material is maintained in a range of 35 - 90° sequentially for each of the regions of the divisions. Thus, the adhesion of the arc spray coating formed on the plug surface can be strengthened, and the plug life can be stably improved.
