Description:

METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING TIMBER KEY

Technical Field

The present invention relates generally to a method for manufacturing a timber key and more particularly to a method for manufacturing a timber key by using timber which is light in weight, soft to the touch so as to make a high-grade product, and capable of replacing a key body made of metallic material of traditional art.

Background Art

A key used to open and close locks is in general formed with a grip in distinction from a key body. As a base material thereof, metallic material is used or metallic material and synthetic resin is ordinarily used.

One of the most widely used methods in manufacturing such keys can be illustrated in FIG. 1. While a metal plate 1 is moving on, a press punches said metal plate 1 according to a desired shape of the key so as to form a key base 2, and a desired key groove 2a and pattern 2b are formed on said punched key base 2 so as to obtain a final product. According to another method, referring to FIG. 2, a key body 3 and a grip 4 are formed separately each other, said key body 3 is inserted into a hole 4a formed at said grip 4, said key body 3 is made fixed and unmoving within the hole 4a by fixing means 4b so as to form a key base 5, and a desired key groove 5a and pattern 5b are formed on said key base 5 so as to obtain a final product. However, those keys manufactured by methods described above are monotonous in shape and the touch is not soft due to inherent property of

metallic raw material, so they are not sufficient to satisfy consumers who want high-grade designs of keys.

According to another method suggested in consideration of above- said problems, referring to FIG. 3, a key body 6 is formed firstly, a grip 7 made of synthetic resin is molded at an end of said key body 6 so as to form a key base 8, a desired key groove is formed at the key body 6 of said key base 8. Those keys manufactured by this method can have higher-grade design adopted for forms of keys; the touch thereof softer and improved to some extent in comparison with the keys made of metallic material according to traditional arts.

In those keys manufactured by above method, however, the key body 6 has to turn as it is inserted in the key hole of a lock in order to open the lock; such motion of turning of a key would be repeated thousands and thousands of times during the life of key, so the key body 6 is made of metallic material having a desired strength sufficient to avoid breakage or damage. Therefore, the key body 6 manufactured as above by metallic material would incur problem and/or inconvenience firstly to the persons who have to keep a plurality of keys at once in a pocket of clothes because heaviness of strung bundle of such keys would make the pocket bulge or hang down so that the style of dressing gets damaged. Secondly in case when the key body 6 made of metallic material is put in a pocket together with a mobile phone, it may occur that the battery terminals of the mobile phone may contact to the key body 6 of metallic material so as to cause discharge of battery and unavailability of the mobile phone. Thirdly even though some of users due to their specific character may have reverse effect against metallic material, there are no solutions on this matter.

Best Mode for Carrying Out the Invention

Hereinafter, a method for manufacturing timber key according to preferred embodiment of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to appended drawings.

Referring to FIGS. 4 to 10, a method for manufacturing timber key according to the present invention comprises a timber-preparing step, a timber-pressing step, a unit-timber forming step, a key-outline forming step, a unit-key cutting step, a unit-key processing step, an ornament-forming step, and an unevenness-forming step.

At timber-preparing step referring to FIG. 4, a timber 11 cut by a certain dimension is prepared. Dimension of the timber 11 should be sufficient in width to receive a plurality of keys to be manufactured and in height to receive wanted number of plurality of keys too. Said timber-pressing step referring to FIG. 5 is a step to press the timber 11 prepared through said timber-preparing step, and comprises a heat-pressing step where a plurality of the timbers 11 prepared from said timber-preparing step are inserted between heat plates 21 of a press 20 and kept pressed by a pressure of 200 to 350 kg/cm2 at heated state of 80 to 120OC under heating until thickness of the timber becomes half the original thickness; and a press-retaining step where said timbers 11 prepared through said heat-pressing step are maintained for a certain time under a state where heat plates 21 of the press 20 have been cooled to ambient temperature. Unexplained numeral 22 stands for a load to press the heat plates and 23 for pillars.

At said heat-pressing step, the timbers 11 are preferably heated at 80 to 120OC in order for the timbers 11 to be pressed smoothly; under a heated state in this way, a pressure of 200 to 350 kg/cm2 is applied; it is preferred that the pressure should be maintained for an hour or longer so that the pressing might be applied uniformly over all of the timbers 11.

At said press-retaining step, the pressed timbers 12 are preferably kept for 30 minutes or longer at a state of pressure maintained but heat cooled to ambient temperature, thereby the pressing might be promoted uniformly over all of the timbers 11 and the pressed timbers 12 might maintain the pressed form as such.

At said unit-timber forming step referring to FIG. 6, the timber 12 pressed through said timber-pressing step is cut into a plurality of pieces, so each piece obtained accordingly is a unit timber 13. At this step, a unit timber 13 has to have a dimension of width that can accept sufficiently width of a key to be manufactured and height that can accept wanted number of plurality of keys one on top of the other.

At said key-outline forming step referring to FIG. 7, a unit timer 13 formed through said unit-timber forming step is cut at edge thereof so that the unit timber 14 cut accordingly can show a key outline consisting of a key body 14a in distinction from a grip part 14b as attached at one end of the key body 14a. Desired uneven part will be formed on the key body as described later in this specification.

At said unit-key cutting step referring to FIG. 8, a plurality of unit keys 15 are formed by cutting horizontally a unit timber 14 prepared through said key-outline forming step into a plurality of pieces. Each piece obtained accordingly is a unit key.

At said unit-key processing step referring to FIG. 9, a unit key 15 prepared through said unit-key cutting step is processed in such a manner that thickness of key body 15a is smaller than that of grip part 15b. Or otherwise if those keys having such a shape as illustrated in FIG. 3 are to be manufactured, the unit key 15 is processed in such a manner that grip part 15b should be thinner in thickness than the key body 15a.

At said ornament-forming step referring to FIG. 10, the grip part 15b of a unit key 15 prepared through said unit-key processing step is formed with ornaments 15d by forming patterns on both faces thereof. Detailed

images, patterns or colors used for said ornaments can be formed in diversity according to user's needs or tastes.

At said unevenness-forming step referring to FIG. 10, a desired uneven part 15c is formed on the key body of unit key 15 having ornaments 15d formed on grip part through said ornament-forming step.

According to the method for manufacturing timber key of the present invention, the timber used as base material of a key is light in weight and has sufficient strength and durability reinforced through said timber-pressing step so as to replace a key body made of metallic material according to traditional art.

The present invention has been described hereinbefore according to preferred embodiments illustrated in appended drawings, which are however explanatory examples; it will be apparent to those who have common knowledge in the art that various modifications, variations and equivalent embodiments can be made without departing from the technical concepts of the invention. Therefore, such kind of equivalent embodiments should also be deemed to be inclusive within the scope of patented right to be claimed according to the present invention.

Industrial Applicability

According to the method for manufacturing a timber key of the present invention, the timber used as base material of a key can replace a key body made of metallic material according to traditional art, thereby a key manufactured by the method of the present invention has weight reduced remarkably and is soft to the touch, so a high-grade product can be obtained.
