Abstract:
A method of melting magnesium or a magnesium alloy in which combustion of the melt is rapidly detected without fail and, based on this result, an alarm is rapidly given and the fire can be extinguished. The melting method comprises melting magnesium or a magnesium alloy in a melting furnace to obtain a melt while supplying a covering gas comprising carbon dioxide and a fireproofing agent to the furnace and keeping the surface of the melt covered with this covering gas. It is characterized in that the concentration of carbon monoxide in the gas which is present in the furnace or is being discharged from the furnace is measured and, based on this value of carbon monoxide concentration, magnesium combustion in the furnace is detected.
