Abstract:

The present invention provides a method for modifying a surface of a vulcanized rubber or a thermoplastic elastomer, the method being capable of imparting various functionalities in an economically advantageous manner such as excellent slidability and biocompatibility depending on application. The present invention is a method for modifying a surface in which an object to be modified is a vulcanized rubber or a thermoplastic elastomer, the method comprising: a step (1) of forming a polymerization initiation point (A) on a surface of the object to be modified; a step (2) of radically polymerizing a non-functional monomer with the polymerization initiation point (A) as a starting point and growing a non-functional polymer chain; a step (3) of cleaning the object to be modified in which the non-functional polymer chain is grown; a step (4) of forming a polymerization initiation point (B) on a surface of the non-functional polymer chain; and a step (5) of radically polymerizing a fluorine-containing functional monomer with the polymerization initiation point (B) as a starting point and growing a fluorine-containing functional polymer chain.
