Disclosed are a method for monitoring a swimming state by means of a wearable device and a wearable device. The method comprises: configuring a swimming mode on a wearable device, storing pre-collected data of reference swimming strokes as corresponding template data items, activating, upon a start of a monitoring process and according to an instruction from a user about to enter the water, the swimming mode, and controlling, after the swimming mode is activated, a sensor to collect swimming stroke data of the user (S11); obtaining, from the swimming stroke data, test data used to identify a swimming state of the user (S12); and matching the test data against each of the template data items, and identifying, upon finding a successful match of the test data, the swimming state of the user as a swimming state corresponding to the template data item associated with the test data (S13). When a user wears the wearable device during swimming, the present invention enables automatic identification of the swimming stroke of the user simply by switching the wearable device to the swimming mode without any additional operation, and further helps the user to learn movement information during swimming, thus optimizing user experience.
