Title:
METHOD A ND APPARATUS FOR SMELTING TITANIUM METAL
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2003/038156
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
A method for smelting a titanium metal (Ti) wherein titanium oxide (TiO2) is subjected to thermal reduction to produce a titanium metal, characterized in that it comprises charging a mixed salt of calcium chloride (CaCl2) and calcium oxide (CaO) into a reaction vessel, heating the mixed salt to prepare a molten salt as a reaction region, electrolyzing the molten salt to thereby convert the reaction region to a strong reducing molten salt containing an 1−valent calcium ion (Ca&plus ) and&sol or calcium (Ca), supplying titanium oxide into the strong reducing molten salt, to reduce the titanium oxide by the 1−valent calcium ion (Ca&plus ) and&sol or calcium (Ca) and deoxidize the titanium metal having been formed by the reduction of the titanium oxide&semi and an apparatus for practicing the method. The method can be employed for producing a titanium metal suitable for various applications advantageously from a commercial view point.
