Abstract:
The proposed method of obtaining a monomer by the pyrolytic decomposition of a polymer and a device for carrying this out relates to organic and polymer chemistry. It offers a safe and convenient way of producing monomers of high purity for purposes of organic synthesis and/or (co-)polymerisation and can be used under laboratory conditions to produce up to 1-3 mol of monomer per day. The proposed method and device are safe, easy to relocate and economical, and allow precise operational control of the pyrolysis process. This is achieved in the following way: the polymer is introduced into the reaction zone (1) at a constant and controlled rate from the hopper of a vacuum worm-feed device (6) outside the reaction chamber. The reaction chamber comprises two integrated sections; on the lower section (1) is mounted a heating device (3) which generates a temperature in the reaction zone sufficient to bring about the depolymerisation of the polymer; on the upper section (2) is mounted a cooling device which keeps the temperature in the monomer removal zone below 373 K. At the outlet of the reaction chamber, a cryogenic and an adsorption pump (11 and 12 respectively) are configured in series; in the former, the monomer condenses on a copper radiator, while the latter maintains a high vacuum in the cryogenic pump even when uncondensed gases are present.
