Title:
METHOD FOR PHOTOOXIDATIVE DECOMPOSITION OF VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUND CONTAINED IN GAS PHASE
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2007/102384
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
A volatile organic compound is often present in the atmosphere in an extremely small concentration and usually has unpleasant odor. Examples of the volatile organic compound include an aromatic hydrocarbon such as toluene and xylene, an aliphatic aldehyde such as acetaldehyde and nonanal, an aliphatic carboxylic acid such as valeric acid, an aliphatic carboxylic acid alkyl ester such as ethyl acetate, and an aliphatic ketone such as methyl isobutyl ketone. Disclosed is a method for photooxidative decomposition of a volatile organic compound contained in a gas phase into a decomposition product containing acetic acid and/or carbon dioxide, thereby reducing the concentration of the volatile organic compound in the gas phase. The method comprises allowing the volatile organic compound to adsorb onto an amorphous silica and irradiating the compound adsorbed on the silica with UV ray.
