Abstract:
[Problem] In a semi-tractor, a coupler for coupling and towing a trailer is located directly above the rear wheels, and it was revealed that when a turn is made at a relatively high speed while carrying a heavy object, the trailer tilts such that the front wheels are lifted. Therefore, when making a turn, the steering wheel becomes unresponsive such that the semi-tractor travels straight and causes a serious accident. [Solution] The coupler is installed in a more forward position. Then, the weight of the trailer is also applied to the front wheels, so that the front wheels are not lifted. Ideally, if the coupler is moved up to the center position between the front and rear wheels, a level of safety matching or exceeding that of a truck can be attained. Furthermore, since existing couplers use mitigated coupling, the trailers have a three-wheeled vehicle-like structure and thus have a structure that is easily tilted and apt to roll over. Thus, in order to prevent this, a recently developed coupler can be used in which the width of the upper surface base extends across the entire width of the vehicle. When improved as such, the semi-trailer has a level of safety that matches or exceeds that of a truck.
