METHOD OF PRODUCING A COMPOSITE CAMSHAFT AND A TOOL FOR CARRYING OUT SAID METHOD

The proposed method of producing a composite camshaft, comprising a carrier pipe (6) and functional elements (4) mounted thereon, involves the following steps: a plurality of longitudinal splines (5) which taper towards points are first formed on the surface of the locating aperture of each functional element; the functional elements are fitted on the pipe (6) which is then mechanically expanded by the application of pressure from inside until the splines (5) of the functional elements (4) are forced into the body of the pipe (6). According to the invention, the pipe is expanded with the aid of the instrument by forming at least three oval projections (7) on the outer surface of the pipe, said projections being evenly distributed around the circumference and the width of each projection being at least twice the distance (8) between the apices of any two adjacent splines (5) on the surfaces of the functional elements (4). The invention is intended primarily for use in the production of internal combustion engines.
