Abstract:
[Problem] To provide a method for producing an electrode catalyst for fuel cells through a heat treatment that is carried out at relatively low temperatures, said electrode catalyst having high catalytic activity and able to be a substitute for a noble metal catalyst. [Solution] A method for producing an electrode catalyst for fuel cells, which comprises: a step (I) for obtaining a catalyst precursor material, said step (I) comprising a step (Ia) wherein at least a metal compound (1), a nitrogen-containing organic compound (2) and a fluorine-containing compound (3) are mixed; and a step (II) wherein an electrode catalyst is obtained by subjecting the catalyst precursor material to a heat treatment at 500-1,300˚C. A part or the whole of the metal compound (1) is a compound which contains an atom of a metal element M1 that is selected from the group consisting of iron, cobalt, chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, titanium, niobium and zirconium. At least one of the compounds (1), (2) and (3) has an oxygen atom.
