Abstract:
Provided is a method capable of easily removing, from low molecular weight polytetrafluoroethylene, nearly all irradiation-derived perfluorocarboxylic acids having 8-14 carbon atoms, and salts thereof. This method for producing low molecular weight polytetrafluoroethylene is characterized by comprising: step (1) of irradiating polytetrafluoroethylene with radiation to obtain low molecular weight polytetrafluoroethylene having a melt viscosity at 380°C of 1×102-7×105 Pa·s; step (2) of pulverizing the low molecular weight polytetrafluoroethylene; and step (3) of heat-treating the low molecular weight polytetrafluoroethylene pulverized in step (2).
