Abstract:
A method for producing low-molecular-weight polytetrafluoroethylene is provided, the method being less apt to yield C6-14 perfluorocarboxylic acids and salts thereof. The method according to the present invention is a method for producing low-molecular-weight polytetrafluoroethylene having a melt viscosity at 380°C of 1.0×102 to 7.0×105 Pa·s, and is characterized by including step (1), in which high-molecular-weight polytetrafluoroethylene is irradiated with radiation substantially in the absence of oxygen to reduce the molecular weight of the high-molecular-weight polytetrafluoroethylene, and step (2), in which at least some of the main-chain radicals and terminal radicals generated by the irradiation are deactivated substantially in the absence of oxygen to obtain the low-molecular-weight polytetrafluoroethylene.
