Abstract:

A methacrylic resin composition containing a dimer and a trimer, each comprising a polymerizable monomer, to a total amount of 0.3% by mass or less is produced by a method which comprises: continuously supplying the polymerizable monomer, a polymerization initiator and a chain transfer agent to a reactor; carrying out the radical bulk polymerization of a portion of the polymerizable monomer in the reactor to thereby produce a resin mixture which comprises a methacrylic resin having 60 to 90% by mass of a structural unit derived from methyl methacrylate, 10 to 40% by mass of a structural unit derived from a methacrylic acid alicyclic hydrocarbon ester and 0 to 10% by mass of a structural unit derived from an acrylic acid ester, an unreacted portion of the polymerizable monomer, and the dimer or the trimer each comprising the polymerizable monomer; continuously transferring the resin mixture from the reactor to a twin-screw extruder having a vent provided therein; and then removing the unreacted portion of the polymerizable monomer and the dimer or the trimer each comprising the polymerizable monomer from the resin mixture in the twin-screw extruder.
