Abstract:
A method for producing an optical fiber preform is a method for producing an optical fiber preform comprising a core part and a clad part and composed of a quartz glass. The method comprises an alkali metal addition step of adding an alkali metal to an area adjacent to the inner surface of a glass pipe composed of a quartz glass at a maximum concentration of 500 ppm or more, an etching step of, subsequent to the alkali metal addition step, allowing an SF6 gas and a chlorine gas to flow through the inside of the glass pipe to achieve gas-phase etching of the inner surface of the glass pipe, and a solidification step of, subsequent to the etching step, solidifying the glass pipe to produce a glass rod. Using the glass rod produced in the solidification step, an optical fiber preform can be produced.
