Title:
METHOD FOR PRODUCING PARTICULATE METAL AND TITANIUM CARBIDE USING RED MUD AS RAW MATERIAL
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2021/008138
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
A method for producing particulate metal and titanium carbide using red mud as a raw material, which belongs to the field of smelting. In the present invention, red mud is firstly mixed with low volatile solid carbon and placed in a molten salt bath, a "reductive molten salt bath" reaction system is constructed, which, in cooperation with a stepwise heating system, reduces, step by step, iron and gallium in the red mud to elemental iron and gallium, and transforms titanium minerals into titanium carbide or titanium oxycarbide. The maximum holding temperature of the molten salt bath is 1148℃-1199℃, and the product after the reaction exists in the form of particles of elemental iron, gallium, gallium-iron alloy, titanium carbide or titanium oxycarbide. The product particles have a high density, and easily sink to the bottom of a reactor. With the help of an air pressure regulation mechanism of the reactor, a lower layer of molten salt containing the reactants is pressed out; then, the solid product particles and liquid molten salt are separated using a porous plate; next, iron, titanium carbide and gallium iron alloy are separated from the solid product by magnetic separation; and finally, titanium carbide particles are separated from the residue using a means of eddy current sorting. The method of the present invention has a short production process, extensive raw material sources and low production costs.
