Abstract:

The present invention is a new method for producing a water-absorbing resin formed by a reverse phase suspension polymerization of a water-soluble ethylenic unsaturated monomer in the presence of an oil-based hydrocarbon dispersion medium, characterized by performing a polymerization reaction under the presence of 0.000015-0.00015 mol of a hypophosphorous acid compound with respect to 1 mol of the water-soluble ethylenic unsaturated monomer by using 0.00005-0.00016 mol of a water-soluble azo-based radical polymerization initiator with respect to 1 mol of the water-soluble ethylenic unsaturated monomer. According to the present invention, emission of the oil-based hydrocarbon dispersion medium out of the reaction system can be controlled to reduce impact on the environment, and a water-absorbing resin can be obtained which simultaneously satisfies high water-holding capacities, high water absorption power under load conditions and properties of having less water-soluble content.
