Abstract:

NO_x storage decomposition catalyst (20) is arranged in an exhaust passage of internal combustion engine. While combustion is carried out at lean air-fuel ratio, nitrogen monoxide is adsorbed on the NO_x storage decomposition catalyst (20) and dissociated. The thus dissociated oxygen is retained in the form of oxide ion O^- on the NO_x storage decomposition catalyst (20). When portion of the oxide ion O^- is purged by enriching of the air-fuel ratio, the rest of oxide ion O^-is also purged. The NO_x purification capability of the NO_x storage decomposition catalyst (20) is restored thereby.
