Abstract:
NOx storage decomposition catalyst (20) is arranged in an exhaust passage of internal combustion engine. While combustion is carried out at lean air-fuel ratio, nitrogen monoxide is adsorbed on the NOx storage decomposition catalyst (20) and dissociated. The thus dissociated oxygen is retained in the form of oxide ion O- on the NOx storage decomposition catalyst (20). When portion of the oxide ion O- is purged by enriching of the air-fuel ratio, the rest of oxide ion O- is also purged. The NOx purification capability of the NOx storage decomposition catalyst (20) is restored thereby.
