Abstract:
A method of purifying pentafluoroethane which comprises the step (A) of conducting a catalytic vapor-phase reaction of a non purified mixture (1) containing at least chloropentafluoroethane (CFC-115) and pentafluoroethane (HFC-125) with hydrogen (4) to reduce the CFC-115, and the step (B) of separating the formed reaction mixture into a first mixture (3) mainly comprising hydrogen and a second mixture (2) mainly comprising the HFC-125, and wherein the formed hydrogen chloride is removed from the first mixture (3) in the step (C) to such an extent that the amount of the hydrogen chloride remaining therein is reduced to 0.5 mol or below per mole of the CFC-115 present in the mixture (1), or wherein the first mixture (3) is added to the nonpurified mixture (1) after removing the hydrogen chloride from the above reaction mixture to such an extent that the amount of the hydrogen chloride remaining therein is reduced to 0.5 mol or below per mole of the CFC-115 present in the mixture (1). The target HFC-125 can be obtained in a high yield by removing CFC-115 efficiently at a low cost without lowering the reactivity (or activity).
