Title:
METHOD FOR RECOVERING SCANDIUM FROM RED MUD FROM ALUMINA PRODUCTION
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2018/236240
Kind Code:
A8
Abstract:
The invention relates to the field of metallurgy of rare metals, more particularly to a method for recovering scandium from red mud, the waste generated in alumina production. The method comprises repulping red mud, sorption leaching scandium from the red mud pulp using an ion-exchange sorbent to give a scandium-loaded ion exchanger and a scandium-depleted pulp, and desorbing scandium using a sodium carbonate solution to give a desorbed ion exchanger, which is then recirculated back into the sorption leaching of scandium, and a reclaimed scandium product solution, which is fed into the production of scandium concentrate by precipitation. The proposed method is characterized in that red mud is repulped using a solution containing a mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate, scandium is sorbed using a phosphorus-containing ion exchanger in a continuous countercurrent operation with direct "pulp-ion exchanger" contact, and scandium is desorbed from the organic phase of the ion exchanger using a sodium carbonate solution at a Na2CO3 concentration of 200-450 g/dm3 to give a reclaimed scandium product, from which a scandium concentrate is separated. The technical result is an increased rate of scandium recovery from red mud along with an improved quality of the reclaimed scandium product and reduced costs of the implemented method.
