Abstract:
A method for recycling a defective from a production process or a waste (hereinafter referred to as a scrap) of a rare earth element magnet, which comprises providing, as a part or the whole of a raw material for an alloy, a scrap of a rare earth element magnet which exhibits uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and has a hard magnetic main phase comprised of an intermetallic compound between a rare earth element and a transition metal element, melting the raw material for an alloy, cooling rapidly the resultant molten alloy so as to form a crystalline structure wherein the hard magnetic main phase is present in the state of fine particles having an average particle size of 1 μm or less, to prepare a rapidly cooled crystalline material, and optionally pulverizing the material, thereby producing a powder for a bonded magnet. The method allows the efficient transformation of a scrap of a rare earth element magnet to a powder for a bonded magnet with a reduced man-hour and energy, which leads to the effective use of rare earth element resources.
