Disclosed are a selection method capable of accurately and easily evaluating the quality of an aliphatic acid alkyl ester used as a starting material in the manufacture of an α-sulfo aliphatic acid alkyl ester (salt); a method for predicting the degree of pigmentation of a reaction product obtained with a sulfonation process and/or esterification process which uses the aforementioned selection method; and an α-sulfo aliphatic acid alkyl ester (salt) and a manufacturing method therefor. This method for selecting an aliphatic acid alkyl ester used as a starting material in the manufacture of an α-sulfo aliphatic acid alkyl ester (salt) is characterized in that the aforementioned aliphatic acid alkyl ester undergoes a sulfuric acid coloration process and the colorability of the aforementioned aliphatic acid alkyl ester is evaluated by measuring the degree of pigmentation of an obtained specimen.
