Embodiments of the present application provide a method and system for controlling a cooling fan of a traction motor, and a freight train. The control method comprises the following steps: a central control unit (CCU) acquiring the state of a traction inverter, the state of a cooling fan, and cooling index information; and according to the state of the traction inverter, the state of the cooling fan, and the cooling index information, determining whether to issue a cooling fan operation request. The CCU acquires the state of the traction inverter from a traction control unit (TCU), acquires the state of the cooling fan from an electrical switch of a cooling fan power supply circuit, and acquires the cooling index information from a system where a cooling index information acquisition device is located. The control system is used for implementing the control method. The freight train comprises the control system. The embodiments of the present application solve the technical problem that the conventional method of controlling the cooling fan jointly by the CCU and the TCU may cause low efficiency and slow response during controlling the cooling fan.
