Abstract:
A method and system for instant message communication in a wireless (30) and wired (42) environment. A message is sent from a mobile unit (36) over a wireless communication network. The message includes a destination address, information associated with the mobile unit's user, message content and message address. If the destination address associated with an instant message function is previously stored at the instant message system (22) for the mobile unit's user, then the associated instant message function is executed at the instant message system using the information contained in the message content. If the destination address associated with an instant message name is previously stored at the instant system for the mobile unit's user, then an instant message is created according to the message content and is sent to the user with associated instant message name.
