Disclosed is a method and system for stereo matching. The method comprises: obtaining a reference image and a target image, and determining a parallax region in a region of aggregation (S10); transforming the reference image into an aggregated reference image and the target image into an aggregated target image using a block transformation algorithm; calculating census characteristics for the images, respectively, and obtaining a matching cost value of the aggregated reference image and the aggregated target image; calculating a regional cost aggregation of reference image blocks and target image blocks at the same corresponding block positions, respectively; if the matching cost value is greater than the regional cost aggregation, re-dividing reference image blocks and target image blocks corresponding to the region, and calculating the regional cost aggregation after performing the division, until the matching cost value is less than all the regional cost aggregation; and calculating cost aggregation for each pixel in the reference image blocks and the corresponding target image blocks and thus a first parallax image. The method of the present invention can effectively address the problem of mismatching in weak texture regions, and has few calculations and good real-time performance.
