Abstract:
At the intake and circulation of ballast water for maintaining the stability of ship (2), sodium hypochlorite generated in seawater electrical unit (13) of ballast water apparatus (1) installed in the ship (2) is injected into the ballast water. Microbes present in the ballast water are inactivated or annihilated by controlling so as for the residual chlorine concentration of the ballast water having sodium hypochlorite injected thereinto to be held within the range of 0.1 to 1 mg/l. After this treatment, prior to discharging of the ballast water, the injection of sodium hypochlorite is terminated and the ballast water is allowed to stand still until the residual chlorine concentration of the ballast water having sodium hypochlorite injected thereinto becomes substantially nil. As a result, any noxious organisms contained in the ballast water taken at a landing port can be inactivated or annihilated without damaging the environment of sea area of a loading port.
