Abstract:
Provided is a method for washing a red mud, which is applicable to a treatment for washing a red mud of an alumina-containing ore containing a large amount of goethite as an iron component and can achieve a high degree of condensasion of a solid material in a red mud.
A method for washing a red mud produced during the production of an soda aluminate solution by subjecting an alumina-containing ore in which the ratio of the mass of goethite to the mass of hematite (i.e., goethite/hematite) in iron components is 60/40 or more to a heating treatment in an alkaline solution at a temperature of 110 to 160˚C, said method comprising mixing the red mud with a dilution solution to produce a suspension having an aluminum concentration of 95 g/L or less in terms of Al2O3 content and then adding a settling aid to the suspension to allow the red mud to be settled and separated, thereby washing the red mud, wherein the settling aid contains a polymer that contains a repeating unit derived from (meth)acrylic acid or a salt thereof and does not substantially contain a repeating unit derived from a vinylhydroxamic acid compound or a salt thereof.
