Title:
METHOD OF WELDING MOTOR VEHICLE ELEMENTS, IN PARTICULAR TAILORED BLANKS
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO2003064096
Kind Code:
A3
Abstract:
The invention relates to an arc welding method. According to the invention, a filler wire is subjected to a cyclical mechanical movement, whereby it approaches and, subsequently, moves away from the pieces to be welded in an alternating manner. In this way, a short circuit is created between the end of said filler wire and the pieces to be assembled and weld metal is deposited thereon, so that a weld joint is gradually produced between said pieces. The inventive method is characterised in that the pieces to be assembled are the constituent elements of a motor vehicle. For example, the elements to be assembled can be selected from the group comprising: the body shell, the rocker panel, tailored blanks, side members, wheel housings, under-seat crossmembers, foot reinforcements, dashboard crossmembers, front crossmembers, shock absorbers and the engine cradle. Preferably, the thickness of the elements to be welded is between 0.5 and 2 mm and, optionally, said elements can comprise a zinc coating on one of the surfaces thereof.
