Title:
METHODS AND STRUCTURES FOR REMOVING ICE FROM SURFACES
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO2000033614
Kind Code:
A3
Abstract:
In one embodiment, a system for modifying ice adhesion strength of ice (102) adhered to an object (110). The system includes an electrode (114) that is electrically insulated from the object (110) and a DC source (116), e.g., a battery, coupled to the object (110) and the electrode (114). The source (116) generates a DC bias to an interface between the ice (102) and the object (110) when the ice (110) completes the circuit. The system preferably includes an electrically insulating material (118) disposed between the object (110) and the electrode (114). In another embodiment, a coating (306) comprising a ferroelectric, lossy dielectric, ferromagnetic or semiconductor material is applied to an object. Electromagnetic energy causes the coating to generate heat, which melts snow and ice.
