Abstract:
A MgB2 based superconductor having a high critical current density, characterized in that it comprises a polycrystalline MgB2 and, dispersed therein, Ti and&sol or a Ti compound&semi and a method for preparing the MgB2 based superconductor which comprises forming by pressing a mixed powder comprising Mg, B and Ti, and sintering the formed product under atmospheric pressure (preferably at 600&ring C or higher). The MgB2 based superconductor preferably has a composition wherein when an atomic ratio of Mg, B and Ti is represented by Mg : B : Ti = x : 2 : y, x is in the range of 0.7 < x < 1.2 and y is in the range of 0.05 < y < 0.3, more preferably 0.07 < y < 0.2. The MgB2 based superconductor exhibits excellent superconducting characteristics (such as a high critical current density) while retaining a high critical temperature characteristics of MgB2, and further can be prepared with ease on a large scale.
