Title:
MICROFLUIDIC SYSTEM
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO2005100953
Kind Code:
A3
Abstract:
A system for measuring fluid viscosity includes microfluidic channels (16) coupled to a micro-cavity (15) having a flexible capacitive sensing diaphragm (12). The system for measuring viscosity further includes semiconductive electrode zones (22, 24) near the micro-cavity for applying an electric field across the electrode zones. The electric field results in increased fluid pressure and, therefore, a deflection of the diaphragm (12). The deflection changes the capacitance of the capacitive sensing diaphragm (12) which is used to determine the viscosity of the fluid. Pumps such as a thermal pump (62) or a surface acoustic wave pump (112) are used to control fluid flow to and from the micro-cavity. Semiconductive device fabrication techniques are also employed to produce the viscosity measuring system.
