The present invention relates to a method for a first mobile ITS station to transmit and receive messages to and from a peripheral mobile ITS station via a first communication interface. More specifically, the present invention, on the basis of receiving messages from at least one peripheral mobile ITS station: identifies a second mobile ITS station having a software version that can be updated in the first mobile ITS station; requests the second mobile ITS station for software update files for the updateable software version via the first communication interface; and receives the software update files from the second mobile ITS station while the connection with the second mobile ITS station persists via the first communication interface.
