Provided is a modified vinyl alcohol-based polymer which is useful as a dispersion stabilizer that is suitable for stably obtaining ultrafine resin particles having high particle size uniformity under a broad range of stirring conditions when a vinyl compound such as vinyl chloride is subjected to suspension polymerization. This modified vinyl alcohol-based polymer has a polyoxyalkylene unit represented by general formula (I) in a side chain, has a carbonyl unit represented by general formula (II) at a main chain terminal, and has a dicarboxylic acid unit represented by general formula (III) in a main chain. (In general formula (I), R1 and R2 are each independently a hydrogen atom, a methyl group or an ethyl group, and R3 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group. n denotes the number of repeating units, and is an integer within the range 1 ≤ n ≤ 70.In general formula (II), A denotes a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1-9 carbon atoms. In general formula (III), X and Y each independently denote an alkyl group having 1-12 carbon atoms, a hydrogen atom or a metal atom.)
