MODULAR CEILING BAFFLES

FIELD OF DISCLOSURE

[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to ceiling baffles and more particularly to an improved construction of such ceiling baffles.

BACKGROUND OF THE DISCLOSURE

[0002] The background description includes information that may be useful in understanding the present invention. It is not an admission that any of the information provided herein is prior art or relevant to the presently claimed invention, or that any publication specifically or implicitly referenced is prior art.

[0003] Baffle Ceilings are well known. Used for any or both of aesthetic considerations and acoustic aspects, a baffle ceiling is an open type ceiling construction. It comprises a set of vertically hung linear profiles (termed baffles) in various patterns and combinations, made of a suitable material (for instance, wood, aluminum and the like), the objective being improved aesthetics and/or better acoustics in the area. Baffle ceilings may provide a view and access to plenum area and concrete ceiling above. Such ceilings find very wide use in areas where ambient noise is to be dampened, such as theaters and the like. As such, baffle ceilings provide an effective and economical system for acoustic treatment in spaces with high sound levels such as schools, libraries, entrance foyers and reception areas, call-centers, airports, stations, retail areas, malls and industries. In fact, their unique aesthetics make them an ideal choice for any space. As the baffles are usually installed vertically/ at an angle to the vertical, multiple surfaces may be exposed to sound waves thereby increasing the amount of surface area exposed to them and reducing reverberation. Particularly in large volume spaces where false ceilings are avoided by designers and concrete ceilings may result in bad acoustical conditions, baffle ceilings are the ideal solutions. Also, such ceilings can be adapted to retrofitting. For instance when acoustical problems with concrete ceilings are noticed after the completion of construction work baffle ceilings can be quickly and easily installed. At the same time, any services at ceiling level (for instance lights, central air-conditioning components such as ducting, grilles, diffusers, piping, air handling units and the like) can be easily accessed. Hence, having considerable possibilities in execution and style, such ceilings are an obvious‘go-to’ choice for improving acoustics and/or aesthetics.

[0004] At the same time, baffle ceilings serve to provide distinctive ambience that can be contemporary, functional and aesthetic. Various designs can be made to suit individual tastes of property owners.

[0005] However, existing baffle ceilings do not offer options for customization. Once installed, the panels cannot be easily removed and replaced by others to change aesthetics and/or improve acoustic performance. Replacing the baffle ceiling completely is a time-consuming and difficult project with high costs and lead time. Hence existing baffle ceilings do not allow for any customization once they have been installed.

[0006] Hence there a need in the art for a baffle ceiling system that is highly customizable according to preferences and requirements of different consumers, not only at the time of initial installation but at anytime thereafter, and in very short time and expense.

[00041] The present disclosure mainly relates to ceiling hung baffles. In particular it pertains to modular baffles.

[00042] In an aspect, present disclosure elaborates upon a baffle comprising a top portion, a bottom portion, and at least one panel held immoveable between the top portion and the bottom portion, wherein the baffle can be configured for holding at least one of a first finishing panel at a first pre-determined angle to the immoveable panel, wherein the holding can be by means of any or a combination of : sliding the at least one of a first finishing panel into a first groove configured in one or both of the top portion and the bottom portion; snap fitting the at least one of a first finishing panel to the immoveable panel; and magnetically holding the at least one of a first finishing panel to the immoveable panel.

[00043] In another aspect, the baffle can be conjoined to at least one another baffle, wherein the conjoining can be by means of any or a combination of: a protrusion configured on top portion of the at least one other baffle, the protrusion configured to slide into a corresponding second groove configured in the bottom portion of the baffle; snap fitting the baffle to the at least one another baffle; and magnetically holding the baffle to the at least one another baffle.

[00044] In another aspect, the first groove can run all along any or both of length and width of the panel.

[00045] In yet another aspect, the at least one other baffle can be held at a second pre determined angle to the baffle by means of appropriately configured the second groove and the protrusion.

[00046] In an aspect, the baffle can hold a second finishing panel in the bottom portion at a third pre-determined angle to the at least one of a first finishing panel.

[00047] In another aspect, the baffle can hold two of the first finishing panels back-to- back to each other.

[00048] In yet another aspect, the baffle can hold a second finishing panel in a space between the first finishing panels by sliding the second finishing panel in at least one groove configured in at least one of the first finishing panels.

[00049] In an aspect, any or both of the first finishing panel and the second finishing panel is made of any or combination of acrylic, cork sheet, pre-laminated boards, fabric, wood, lacquered glass, Veneer, printed vinyl on sun-board, and edge lit acrylic.

[00050] In another aspect, the first pre-determined angle can be 0 Degrees, that is, the at least one of a first finishing panel can be held parallel to the immoveable panel.

[00051] In yet another aspect, the second pre-determined angle can be 90 Degrees, and the third pre-determined angle can be 90 Degrees. [00052] Proposed modular baffles can enable highly customizable, multifunctional and modular ceiling baffles system with innumerable combination of materials, patterns, orientation, profiles, finishes and integrated lighting solutions. As such, proposed baffles can find good use for various commercial spaces such as Airports, Railways & Metro Stations, Offices, Cafes, as well as residential spaces like villas and apartments.

[00053] V arious faces of baffles provided can be lit with edge lit acrylic.

[00054] In an exemplary embodiment, same profile of a baffle ceiling can be assembled in six different combinations of shapes and orientations. This is an exemplary embodiment only and not a limitation as a plurality of shapes and orientations can be achieved as required.

[00055] Proposed baffles can include finishing panels in various combinations and permutations of patterns and finishing materials to suit the functional, aesthetical & acoustic requirements. In exemplary embodiments for example, such materials can be lacquered glass, laminated ply or pre-laminated board, edge-lit acrylic, cork, printed vinyl, polished veneer and so on. The removable finishing panels as well as immoveable panels can incorporate various sound absorbing materials such as cork, mineral wool etc. at very low cost. The baffles can be easily arranged, re-arranged and even re-located.

[00056] A ceiling system made of baffles proposed is easy to assemble, change, dismantle and reuse. Further, such a ceiling system can provide easy accessibility to ceiling services such as piping, wiring, ductwork for maintenance work. Baffles and ceiling systems made of such baffles use least number of components thus lessening logistics related issues. Baffles proposed require almost zero maintenance and can be very economically priced.

[00057] In an aspect, baffles proposed can have different section profiles and can be used individually or in various combinations as further elaborated. In an exemplary embodiment a ceiling system made of modular baffles proposed can have baffles of two types of profiles, say profile X and Profile Y. A baffle of profile X can be combined with that of profile Y in an easily removable manner, thereby leading to a new profile, say profile Z. All such profiles can be hung at different angles in the ceiling. Such angles can be, in an exemplary embodiment, two. Hence, in an exemplary embodiment, proposed system can comprise three different baffle profiles each of which can be installed/hung/affixed in a ceiling at two different angles, thereby leading to a total of six combinations of shapes. Further, as already elaborated, each of these shapes can comprise baffles of different materials, finishes, colors etc.

[00058] In an aspect, a baffle proposed can be so formed that it carries some means via which additional panels (termed as finishing panels herein) can be incorporated over face of its immoveable panel(s) in a removable manner. The means can include, for instance slots and grooves as elaborated further. In this manner, a baffle can hold finishing panels of huge number of materials and their combinations as elaborated above and further. Finishing panels can as well be snap-fit into corresponding grooves on the immoveable panels. A finishing panel can as well be held appropriately over a corresponding immoveable panel using magnetic holding

[00059] FIGs. 1A to 1C illustrate different views of a profile of proposed baffle, in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure.

[00060] As illustrated in FIG. 1A, proposed baffle 100 can include a top portion 102, a bottom portion 104 and a panel 106 held immoveable between the two portions.

[00061] Further, as shown in FIG. 1B, any or both of top portion 102 and bottom portion 104 can be configured to have grooves running in a longitudinal direction, shown as l08.The grooves 108 can be so configured that they can hold at least one finishing panel parallel to or at an angle to the panel 106 in a removable manner.

[00062] In an aspect, proposed baffle can be a one piece construction so as to provide it with appropriate rigidity.

[00063] Grooves 108 can be of press-fit form so that the finishing panel (shown as 110 in FIG.1A) can be held tight in them by means of sliding it in as shown. As already elaborated, finishing panel 110 can as well be snap-fit over panel 106.

[00064] Finishing panel 110 can be in a plurality of finishes, colors, materials etc. Besides, it can have edge lit acrylic. As can be readily understood, look of a baffle ceiling system using proposed baffles can be very easily and quickly changed by taking out panels 110 of, for example, one color and replacing them with panels 110 of another color.

[00065] Baffle 100 can in turn be fitted into a ceiling by means of suitable arrangements provide in its top portion. In an exemplary embodiment, top portion 102 can have a protrusion shown as 112 that can be used to fit the baffle 100 in a corresponding channel/frame fitted in a ceiling. Groove 112 can as well be configured at an angle to top portion 102 so that baffle 100 hangs at an angle to the ceiling, thereby providing an angular look to a ceiling system configured in such a manner.

[00066] Baffle 100 can be conjoined in a modular manner to other baffles of similar/different profiles so as to provide different looks to ceilings fitted with such combinations. For the purpose, bottom portion 104 can have appropriate grooves, and top portion 102 can have corresponding protrusions. For instance, a groove 114 can be configured in bottom portion of baffle 100 in such a manner that protrusion 112 of top portion of another baffle 100 (say baffle 100-2) can slide into it, thereby joining the two baffles in an L shape, or at any pre determined angle. Existing grooves being used for finishing panels (such as grooves 108, 116 and 118) can as well be used for the purpose. Different baffles can be snap-fit into appropriate grooves on corresponding baffles with which they are to be conjoined. Or two/more baffles can be appropriately conjoined using magnetic holding. As already elaborated, baffle 100-2 can as well hold a variety of finishing panels 110. In this manner, the two baffles conjoined together can provide a different look to the ceiling where such a system is affixed. At the same time, at any time baffle 100-2 can be easily slid out of baffle 100, thereby changing quickly look of the ceiling.

[00067] As can be readily understood, baffles proposed can have different profiles. For instance, grooves can be configured on other side of panel 106 as well, as shown by 116 in FIG. 1B. Grooves 116 can as well hold finishing panel 110. In an exemplary embodiment, panel 110 (say panel 110-2) kept in grooves 108 can be of a different color than that kept in grooves 116 (say panel 110-4). When a ceiling is fitted with baffles in such a manner, a viewer on side of panel 110-2 will see a different ceiling than that on side of panel 110-4. In this manner, baffle 100 proposed can hold two finishing panels in a back-to-back manner.

[00068] A plurality of patterns can likewise be configured by having appropriate grooves / fixing means on baffle lOO.For instance, bottom portion 104 of baffle 100 can as well be configured with grooves shown as 118 in FIG. 1C. Grooves 118 can hold another finishing panel of appropriate size (say panel 120 as shown). Panel 120 can be of edge lit acrylic type. A ceiling can be fitted by both panel 110 and panel 120 in their corresponding grooves on baffle 100 in an easy and quickly removable manner, in order to provide for a variety of looks to the ceiling. [00069] FIG. 2 illustrates side view of another profile of proposed baffle, in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure.

[00070] In an aspect, a baffle 200 can be so configured that it has two panels in a back-to- back manner, with means to configure/ slide over any or both of them finishing panels in an easily removable manner. Further, a space can be maintained between the two panels and the same can be used to provide another finishing panel (that can be similar to finishing panels already provided, or of a different type). The baffle can be configured with means to attach it in an easily removable manner to any other similar panel.

[00071] As illustrated in FIG. 2, baffle 200 can be configured to have two panels shown as l06a and l06b, and a gap shown as 202 can be configured between the two panels. Grooves shown as 108 and 116 (as in FIG.l) can be configured adjacent to the panels as shown. The grooves can be used for holding finishing panels next to the two panels l06a and l06b. The finishing panels can be of different materials so that each side of the baffle 200 presents a different finish/color to a viewer.

[00072] Further, gap 202 can as well have means (such as grooves) to hold a finishing panel at a pre-determined angle (say 90 degrees) to panels 106. For instance, grooves 204 can be made on panels 106 in such a manner that a finishing panel covers space 202. In this manner, baffle as disclosed in FIG. 2 can have three different areas on which three different finishing panels can be affixed in an easily removable manner, thereby leading to many variations in ceiling baffle systems that can be configured. Finishing panel covering space 202 can have edge lit acrylic. When baffle 200 is affixed on a ceiling, the edge lit acrylic finishing panel will be at the bottom and so, a viewer looking up towards the ceiling can get a nice aesthetic effect., as well as can assist in general lighting of the space.

[00073] Baffle 200 can as well be affixed with suitable means so that it can be conjoined with other baffles (either baffle 200 or baffle 100, or any other similar, or even more than two baffles) in an easily removable manner, hereby leading to different modular baffle ceiling systems. Grooves and/or protrusions or any combinations can accordingly be provided on baffle 200 as appropriate. All such means are fully a part of the present disclosure.

[00074] In this manner, various baffles can be merged with each other by conjoining them mechanically in an easily removable manner as elaborated above, thereby providing a new innovative modular baffle ceiling system with flexibility to have multiple orientations and faces containing various types of materials and a huge number of patterns, finishes, and combinations on such multiple faces. The finishing panels can be so configured that different finishing panels are visible from different areas of a space in which they are configured, thereby adding to aesthetics created by them. Baffles can be so conjoined with each other so as to lead to different profiles such as square, rectangular, pentagon, sine wave etc. as further elaborated in FIG. 4.

[00075] In various exemplary embodiments, the baffles can be made of Aluminum 6063 T6. They can have an anodized finish while the frames can be powder coated. The finishing panels can be made of different other materials, used individually or in a suitable combination. Such materials can include, for example, acrylic, cork sheet, pre-laminated boards, fabric, wood, lacquered glass, Veneer, printed vinyl on sun-board and Edge Lit LED with acrylic sheet.

Different lengths of profiles can be configured. In an exemplary embodiment, such length can range from 2440 mm to 4800mm.

[00076] The baffles (except for the finishing panels) along with various arrangements of grooves, protrusions etc. as described above can be made as a single piece construction by using appropriate means. Lor instance, if baffles are made of Aluminum 6063 T6, extrusion and pressure die casting (PDC) may be used. Any other means of making baffles as elaborated above can as well be used. Any other suitable material can similarly be used. Lor instance, baffles can be made of, amongst other materials but not limited to, molded rubber, LRP, carbon composites and can have grooves and protrusions as elaborated above. Linishing panels slid into the grooves can also serve to provide rigidity to such panels. Immoveable panel (for eg. panel 106) need not be same size as the finishing panel. It can instead be one/plurality of strips held immovable between top portion and bottom portion of the baffle, its objective being to grant rigidity to the baffle and provide support to the finishing panels, while the top portion and the bottom portion of the baffle can have grooves as elaborated above to hold finishing panels. Depending upon size of the finishing panel, each side of the immovable panels can hold more than one finishing panels and so, a combination of colors/ finishes etc. can be achieved on each side of the immovable panels thereby leading to more choices for users of baffles proposed. All such embodiments and their modifications are fully a part of the present disclosure. [00077] While the disclosure above elaborates upon baffles used for acoustic purposes by hanging them from a ceiling, it can readily be appreciated that the same principles and concepts can be used for any other purposes (for instance, decorative grilles and frame, panels on the wall and the like) Modular baffles as elaborated herein can be hung from roof and ceiling, and even configured on the wall as a paneling and floor. All such embodiments are fully a part of the present disclosure.

[00078] FIGs. 3A to 3D illustrate various modular baffle systems that can be configured using baffles proposed, in accordance with exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure.

[00079] As shown in FIG. 3 A, a plurality of baffles of profile described in FIG. 1B above can be hung vertically on a ceiling using appropriate hanging arrangements. In an exemplary embodiment, a hanging arrangement can include using channels predetermined distance apart fixed on the ceiling, the channels in turn holding baffles proposed by means of hangers as illustrated. The baffles themselves can have channel and grooves into which bolts can be inserted in order to tie the baffles to other members /surfaces, thereby reducing the requirement of additional fixing parts. Each baffle can have an immoveable panel shown as 106. Grooves 116 and 108 as elaborated in FIG.l can each hold finishing panels 110 as shown. One finishing panel can be different from another and the grooves can enable a user of the proposed modular baffles to easily change finishing panels 110 and so change the complete aesthetics and look of the ceiling.

[00080] As shown in FIG. 3B, a plurality of baffles of profile described in FIG. 1B above can likewise be hung at an angle to the ceiling using appropriate hanging arrangements as shown.

[00081] FIG. 3C illustrates a plurality of baffles of profile described in FIG. 2 above, hanging vertically from a ceiling using appropriate hanging arrangements. As illustrated, each baffle has two immovable panels ( l06a and l06b as shown in FIG. 2) and can hold two finishing panels 1 lOa and 1 lOb vertically ( using grooves 116 and 108 as shown in FIG.2) , and a third finishing panel l lOc in space between the two panels inappropriate grooves configured on them (such as 204 in FIG.2) . All the finishing panels are easily removable thereby leading to a modular baffle ceiling system wherein the aesthetics and look of the ceiling can be quickly changed by quickly replacing the finishing panels. [00082] FIG.3D illustrates how two baffles can be combined to create a different profile. In this case, baffles as elaborated in FIG. 1A are shown joined to a baffle as elaborated in FIG.2 by means of appropriate grooves and protrusions. Groove 114 as shown in FIG. 1B can hold a protrusion (that can be, for instance, configured on/in top portion of panel l06a), thereby holding the two baffles together in an easily removable manner. Finishing panels can as well be put on both the panels in a similar easily removable manner.

[00083] As can be readily understood, the combined arrangement of the baffles as shown in FIG. 3D can as well be held at an angle to the ceiling. Or baffle of one profile can be attached at an angle to baffle of same/another profile by means of appropriate arrangement of grooves and protrusions etc. in a manner as explained. All such modifications and embodiments are fully a part of the present disclosure.

[00084] FIGs. 4A to 4F illustrate various exemplary profiles of baffle systems that can be configured using baffles proposed, in accordance with exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure.

[00085] As described above, various baffles can be easily conjoined with each other to produce a variety of profiles of ceilings. There is no limit to profiles possible and FIGs. 4A to 4F illustrate a few such possibilities such as square, triangular, sine wave etc.

[00086] As used herein, and unless the context dictates otherwise, the term“coupled to” is intended to include both direct coupling (in which two elements that are coupled to each other or in contact with each other) and indirect coupling (in which at least one additional element is located between the two elements). Therefore, the terms“coupled to” and“coupled with” are used synonymously.

[00087] Moreover, in interpreting both the specification and the claims, all terms should be interpreted in the broadest possible manner consistent with the context. In particular, the terms“comprises” and“comprising” should be interpreted as referring to elements, components, or steps in a non-exclusive manner, indicating that the referenced elements, components, or steps may be present, or utilized, or combined with other elements, components, or steps that are not expressly referenced. Where the specification claims refers to at least one of something selected from the group consisting of A, B, C ... .and N, the text should be interpreted as requiring only one element from the group, not A plus N, or B plus N, etc. [00088] While some embodiments of the present disclosure have been illustrated and described, those are completely exemplary in nature. The disclosure is not limited to the embodiments as elaborated herein only and it would be apparent to those skilled in the art that numerous modifications besides those already described are possible without departing from the inventive concepts herein. All such modifications, changes, variations, substitutions, and equivalents are completely within the scope of the present disclosure. The inventive subject matter, therefore, is not to be restricted except in the spirit of the appended claims.
