Title:
MOLTEN SALT ELECTROLYTIC CELL AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING ZINC
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2004/074552
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
Zinc and chlorine are produced from zinc chloride by using an electrolytic cell which comprises positive and negative electrodes standing upright or inclined, a gas collecting portion arranged above the electrodes, and a zinc reservoir arranged below the electrodes. The electrolytic cell can produce zinc and chlorine at a low electrolytic voltage, namely with a smaller electric power consumption. Zinc as a product is separated from the zinc chloride, i.e. a raw material, due to the specific gravity difference between zinc and zinc chloride, and is collected in the zinc reservoir, while the produced chlorine goes upward as a gas. Accordingly, zinc and chlorine can be efficiently separated by electrolysis.
