Provided is a monitoring system for preventing breakage of a conveyor belt caused by damage on the surface, by enabling the damaged state of the surface of cover rubber to be easily determined within a short time. Surface image data of an upper cover rubber 13 is continuously and sequentially photographed by a surface camera device 2, and inputted to an arithmetic device 3. Peripheral direction position data regarding a conveyor belt 11 in respective sets of the surface image data, and data pertaining to the time at which the respective sets of the surface image data have been photographed, are stored in a database 4 in association with the respective sets of the surface image data. By using an input means 5, an arbitrarily defined set of the surface image data is displayed on a monitor 6 and a set of the surface image data in which there is prescribed damage on the surface of the upper cover rubber 13 is registered as data to be monitored in the database 4. A set of the surface image data having the same peripheral direction position data as that of the data to be monitored is automatically registered as associated data to be monitored in the database 4.
