Description:
MONKEY BARS INSTALLATION

TECHNICAL FIELD

[ 0001 ] This invention relates to the field of playground apparatus such as monkey bars and associated climbing and/or exercise frames, in general, and more specifically to a monkey bars installation, a kit for such a monkey bars installation and an associated connection fitting for a monkey bars installation.

BACKGROUND ART

[ 0002 ] The following discussion of the background art is intended to facilitate an understanding of the present invention only. The discussion is not an acknowledgement or admission that any of the material referred to is or was part of the common general knowledge as at the priority date of the application.

[ 0003 ] Monkey bars, also called a jungle gym or a climbing frame, is known in the art and is generally a piece of playground and/or exercise equipment made of many pieces of material, such as metal pipe bars or beams, on which participants can climb, hang, sit, swing, slide etc. Such monkey bars may take a nearly infinite number of configurations depending on requirements. Monkey bar configurations may include platforms with ladders and railings around the outer edges, exercise equipment, climbing ropes, etc. A variety of shapes are typically seen in school playgrounds, parks, and backyards, including geodesics, shaped structures, and other configurations. [0004] One common type of monkey bar configuration is a row of overhead bars, high enough to hang from, but not so high as to cause serious injury in a fall. A user can swing hand-over-hand from one end to the other, or hang upside down from the bars by the back of the knees, or perform pull-ups, or the like.

[0005] Applicant has developed free-standing monkey bars that generally do not require permanent installation necessitating foundation structures and related cementing into the ground. However, a common shortcoming with such free-standing monkey bars that do not require such anchoring is ensuring proper assembly, which is often done by an end- user themselves. In particular, such free-standing monkey bars are typically sold as do-it-yourself kits, where parents with children or fitness enthusiasts purchase such kits online for self-assembly. Such kits are generally flat-packed to facilitate shipping as well. When received, the kit requires self-assembly of the constituent parts and components .

[0006] Accordingly, as most people assembling such a monkey bar kit are not necessarily particularly skilled or proficient with mechanical assembly, a shortcoming exists where incorrect assembly of parts may lead to a monkey bar installation that leads to reduced performance, is not stable or 'wobbly', and can even lead to injury or other problems during use. Importantly, as a monkey bar installation generally consists of a plurality of parts that require proper assembly, small assembly errors between individual parts can propagate throughout an overall installation, compounding assembly problems and making it very difficult to correct a number of such small and often imperceptible errors to an unskilled assembler.

[0007] The current invention was conceived with this shortcoming of proper assembly of a monkey bar installation in mind.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS

[0066] Further features of the present invention are more fully described in the following description of several non limiting embodiments thereof. This description is included solely for the purposes of exemplifying the present invention to the skilled addressee. It should not be understood as a restriction on the broad summary, disclosure or description of the invention as set out above.

[0067] In the figures, incorporated to illustrate features of the example embodiment or embodiments, like reference numerals are used to identify like parts throughout. Additionally, features, mechanisms and aspects well-known and understood in the art will not be described in detail, as such features, mechanisms and aspects will be within the understanding of the skilled addressee.

[0068] With reference now to the accompanying figures, the present invention broadly provides for a monkey bars installation 10, a kit for such a monkey bars installation 10 and an associated connection fitting 14 for a monkey bars installation 10.

[0069] The skilled addressee is to appreciate that the present invention seeks to ameliorate the assembly of a monkey bars installation which is generally sold as a kit for do-it-yourself assembly, often by unskilled, unpractised or unfamiliar users who are not necessarily particularly skilled or proficient with mechanical assembly. In particular, as such a monkey bars installation generally consists of a number of parts, small assembly errors that may not appear incorrect to an unskilled or unpractised user can easily propagate throughout a monkey bars installation, hindering proper installation leading to unstable monkey bars, or the like, i.e. compounding of errors leading to larger assembly issues, etc.

[0070] For example, as a general geometric assembly of parts to form a specific predetermined monkey bars installation, if upright supporting bars that require symmetrical assembly are assembled slightly and imperceptibly asymmetrically, proper interconnection of horizontal bars between such upright supporting bars may be difficult due to misalignment and unwanted asymmetry. Additionally, as the Applicant has developed free-standing monkey bars installations that do not require mounting to a surface via concrete foundations or the like, any improper or incorrect assembly of a monkey bars installation can lead to instability or undesired performance of the monkey bars installation. The present invention seeks to minimise such assembly errors particularly via the specifically-configured connection fittings 14 described herein.

[0071] The skilled addressee is further to appreciate that the present invention is applicable to an almost infinite variety of monkey bars installation configurations, as is known in the art, depending on desires and/or requirements of a user.

[0072] Broadly, the present invention provides for a monkey bars installation 10 comprising a plurality of bars 12 that are shaped and dimensioned for operative interconnection, as well as a plurality of connection fittings 14 to facilitate such interconnection of bars 12. The bars 12 are generally shaped and dimensioned such that proper interconnection thereof via the connection fittings 14 provides a predetermined monkey bars installation.

[0073] Each connection fitting 14 typically comprises at least one bolt clamp 16 defining a substantially circular arc receptacle 18 for receiving and substantially surrounding an end of a bar 12 or bar end therein to apply a distributed clamping force thereabout, in use. The bars 12 generally comprise cylindrical tubes with a diameter less than a diameter of the circular arc receptacle 18 to allow a bar 12 to be received into the receptacle 18 for clamping. For simplicity of production, a typical monkey bars installation is manufactured with bars of the same diameter, with different lengths as necessary to provide for a particular monkey bars configuration when assembled.

[0074] In an embodiment, the bolt clamp 16 comprises a plurality of bolts 32 for clamping a bar end 12 within said receptacle 18. In the exemplified embodiments, the bolt clamp 16 comprises two or three bolts 32 with suitable female threaded fasteners, as shown, but variations hereon are possible and expected. Similarly, while a bolt clamp is described, mechanically analogous clamps are apposite and may be apposite if suitable, e.g. over-centre clamps, pipe clamps, etc.

[0075] The circular arc receptacle 18 generally comprises a side wall 24 made from a particular material, with said side wall 24 being a major arc of the associated circle spanning at least 270° of such a circle, i.e. a major arc of between 3n/2 radians and 2n radians, as known in the art of geometry. In an embodiment, a circumferential length or major arc span of said side wall 24 is selected to provide an indication of desired clamping force applied to a bar end 12 for proper assembly when clamping said bar. In such an embodiment, ends of said side wall 24 may be configured to abut against each other when a desired clamping force is achieved when tightening bolt clamp 16. Depending on requirements, the side wall 24 of the circular arc receptacle 18 may be manufactured from a resiliently flexible material, such as glass filled polyamides or similar polymers, or metal, or the like.

[0076] Importantly, the receptacle 18 further defines a bar stop 20 at a predetermined position therein for locating and positioning said bar end 12 substantially vertically within the receptacle 18. Such a bar stop 20 is specifically configured to locate and position the bar end 12 where needed to ensure proper assembly of the monkey bars installation 10. In an embodiment, the bar stop 20 comprises a circumferential flange 26 about an inner surface of said receptacle 18, as shown, said flange 26 located at a predetermined position within said receptacle 18.

[ 0077 ] The circumferential flange 26 is typically configured to provide an abutment surface 28 against which a bar end 12 is able to lie flush to locate and position the bar 12 at a predetermined position and orientation within said monkey bars installation 10. The skilled addressee is to appreciate that by configuring such bar stops 20 of the respective connection fittings 14 appropriately, it is possible to facilitate easy of assembly for the unskilled or unfamiliar user by simply abutting a bar end 12 against the relevant bar stop 20 and clamping the bolt clamp 16 accordingly.

[ 0078 ] In an embodiment, the bar stop 20 may comprise alternatively or additionally a transverse impediment 30 within the circular arc receptacle 18 for locating and positioning the bar 12 at a predetermined position and orientation within said monkey bar installation 10. Typically, the bar stop 20 comprises a transverse diameter impediment 30 across the circular arc receptacle 18 for locating and positioning the bar 12 at a predetermined position and orientation within said monkey bar installation 10, but variations hereon are possible, e.g. an offset impediment, or the like. [ 0079 ] The circular arc receptacle 18 is further generally configured to define a viewing aperture 22 to allow visual confirmation that said received bar end 12 lies flush against said bar stop 20, e.g. flange 26 and/or impediment 30, during interconnection in order to facilitate correct assembly of the monkey bars installation 10. In an embodiment, the viewing aperture 22 comprises a break in the side wall 24 of the circular arc 18, as shown. Typically, the viewing aperture 22 comprises a space between the ends of the side wall 24 of the circular arc receptacle 18 and forms a minor arc of such circle spanning not more than 90° of the circle, i.e. a minor arc of less than between n/2 radians. Analogous variations hereon are possible and expected, e.g. in an embodiment, the viewing aperture 22 may be realised as a transparent or translucent portion in the side wall 24 of the circular arc 18, or the like.

[ 0080 ] With reference to figures 6 to 14, the skilled addressee is to appreciate that such connection fittings 14 may take a variety of forms. For example, the connection fittings 14 may include a 90-degree connection fitting 14 configured to interconnect and position two bars 12 at a 90- degree angle to each other, a bar-end connection fitting 14 configured to connect to an end of a bar 12 to locate and position said bar end at a predetermined position within the monkey bar installation 10, an angled connection fitting 14 configured to interconnect two bars 12 at a predetermined angle to each other relative to the monkey bar installation 10, an adjustable angle connection fitting which can be used to adjust an angle between interconnected bars 12, a connection fitting 14 with a bolt clamp 16 configured to allow a bar 12 to pass substantially through said receptacle, i.e. a receptacle sans a bar stop 20, and/or the like. [0081] The skilled addressee will further appreciate that additional fittings 34, examples of which are shown in Figures 15 and 16, may also form part of monkey bars installation 10. Such additional fittings 34 may include an attachment connection fitting shown in Figure 15, useable to attach components such as swing chains and boxing speed bags to the monkey bars installation 10, and a bar diameter extender connection fitting shown in Figure 16, which is useable to increase a diameter of a thinner bar, e.g. ladder bars etc., for use with the receptacle 18, or the like.

[0082] In an embodiment, the connection fittings 14 and/or bar ends 12 may further comprise a predetermined colour to facilitate interconnection of bars 12 with such fittings. For example, bar ends of supporting upright bars may be coloured the same as connection fittings required to be attached to such bar ends, with other specific fittings having the same colour as the bars or bar ends to which they must connect for proper assembly. Variations hereon are possible and within the scope of the present invention.

[0083] Applicant believes it particularly advantageous that the present invention provides for a monkey bars installation with constituent parts configured to facilitate ease of assembly by unskilled or unfamiliar users. The connection fittings of the present invention may serve to minimise undesired asymmetrical assembly of monkey bars via the bar stops 20 and viewing apertures 22, as described. Such connection fittings find particular application in the assembly of free-standing monkey bars installations that do not require mounting to a surface via concrete foundations or the like. [0084] Optional embodiments of the present invention may also be said to broadly consist in the parts, elements and features referred to or indicated herein, individually or collectively, in any or all combinations of two or more of the parts, elements or features, and wherein specific integers are mentioned herein which have known equivalents in the art to which the invention relates, such known equivalents are deemed to be incorporated herein as if individually set forth. In the example embodiments, well- known processes, well-known device structures, and well-known technologies are not described in detail, as such will be readily understood by the skilled addressee.

[0085] The use of the terms "a", "an", "said", "the", and/or similar referents in the context of describing various embodiments (especially in the context of the claimed subject matter) are to be construed to cover both the singular and the plural, unless otherwise indicated herein or clearly contradicted by context. The terms "comprising," "having," "including, " and "containing" are to be construed as open- ended terms (i.e., meaning "including, but not limited to,") unless otherwise noted. As used herein, the term "and/or" includes any and all combinations of one or more of the associated listed items. No language in the specification should be construed as indicating any non-claimed subject matter as essential to the practice of the claimed subject matter.

[0086] Spatially relative terms, such as "inner, " "outer, " "beneath, " "below, " "lower, " "above, " "upper, " and the like, may be used herein for ease of description to describe one element or feature's relationship to another element(s) or feature (s) as illustrated in the figures. Spatially relative terms may be intended to encompass different orientations of the device in use or operation in addition to the orientation depicted in the figures. For example, if the device in the figures is turned over, elements described as "below" or "beneath" other elements or features would then be oriented "above" the other elements or features. Thus, the example term "below" can encompass both an orientation of above and below. The device may be otherwise oriented (rotated 90 degrees or at other orientations) and the spatially relative descriptors used herein interpreted accordingly.

[0087] It is to be appreciated that reference to "one example" or "an example" of the invention, or similar exemplary language (e.g., "such as") herein, is not made in an exclusive sense. Various substantially and specifically practical and useful exemplary embodiments of the claimed subject matter are described herein, textually and/or graphically, for carrying out the claimed subject matter.

[0088] Accordingly, one example may exemplify certain aspects of the invention, whilst other aspects are exemplified in a different example. These examples are intended to assist the skilled person in performing the invention and are not intended to limit the overall scope of the invention in any way unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. Variations (e.g. modifications and/or enhancements) of one or more embodiments described herein might become apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art upon reading this application. The inventor (s) expects skilled artisans to employ such variations as appropriate, and the inventor(s) intends for the claimed subject matter to be practiced other than as specifically described herein.
