Abstract:
The invention provides a refractory exhibiting high durability and long lifetime even under severe conditions. The refractory consists of a mixture containing an auxiliary raw material consisting of 2 to 10% by mass of silicon carbide and/or 3 to 10% by mass of chamotte and a binder with the balance being at least one main raw material selected from among corundum, mullite, bauxite, chamotte, agalmatolite, and silica, and is to be used in a state exposed to alkali-containing gaseous atmosphere at high temperature. In an alkali-containing gaseous atmosphere at high temperature (750°C or above), the silicon carbide and/or the chamotte vitrifies in the surface layer of the refractory in a thickness of 1mm or below to inhibit the alkali-containing gas from entering the inside of the refractory.
